Jane Cornish Smith: August 7 – October 16

“With Points of View, I sought to capture textural tones of the rural world, with paintings that exhibit close and distant perspectives. Abstracted outdoor imagery is created using encaustic, cold wax/oil mediums, and other materials including beeswax, linseed oil, and tree resin– underscoring a connection to nature. The wax, with its suspended pigments, creates translucent layers that provide a look into featured environments, both near and far.” ~Jane Cornish Smith

Originally from Canada, Texas resident Jane Cornish Smith’s nomadic childhood, along with her artist mother, fostered an appreciation for varied artistic expression from a young age. A versatile artist, Jane produces multi media artworks– oil, gouache, mixed media, cold wax medium, encaustic and collage– with equally diverse subject matter.

She received B.F.A. and M.L.A. degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and her MFA degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She has completed artist residencies at the International School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She received Purchase Awards from the University of Texas at Tyler, Texas A&M University-Commerce, and Brookhaven College. Her work also hangs in the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery in Wales, U.K.; the Cancer Support Community of North Texas, University Park Public Library in Dallas; and other public and private collections.
